8 Pillars of Joy - Acceptance
"Why be unhappy about something if it can be remedied? What is the use of being unhappy if it cannot be remedied?" , The Book of Joy
I have been blessed to be one of those people that doesn't "worry" about everything. My faith is strong and that has allowed me to trust that the right things will happen, if given enough time. But so many people spend their time and energy worrying about things that MIGHT happen. Or people have a hard time accepting a situation as it is, wishing it was different. This non-acceptance has so many negative affects on us. It creates stress, anxiety, dissatisfaction with life, and impacts your physical health. Life feels like you are riding down a pothole filled street in Cleveland in January!
Allowing ourselves to stop struggling against the current situation, is like repaving the road. Life becomes smoother, and we live with more comfort, ease and joy. Nobody is saying that we should give up on a dream or goal, but it is important to learn how to live in the present situation, loving and living it fully. At the same time, we continue to work hard on ourselves and serve others. By doing the good work, without attachment to the outcome. we allow amazing opportunities to come from the universe, that we could never have predicted. Practicing acceptance and gratitude with our current situation allows us to experience joy while pursuing our dharma (life's work).
Here are some simple ways to practice acceptance:
1. Write down 3 things you are grateful for each day
2. Spend time in nature and admire the beauty and imperfection of all creation
3. Spend time with children, sharing in their innocence and unconditional love
4. Meditate, which can take the form of focused gardening, cooking, art or any other practice that allows you to "be in the moment"
Don't let lack of acceptance steel your joy. Let go of pre-conceived notions of how life "should be" and actually live the life you have. Life is too short and your health and happiness depend on it!
Wishing you a life of happiness and vitality.
